Down For Repairs

No, for a change I don't mean my computer, I mean my bicycle. I took it to the shop and told them about the problems I've been having and they quickly checked it out and said that the assembly that holds the pedals to the frame is coming apart. Inexplicably, they said they could fix it but it'd only last a month or so and then it would have to be replaced. I guess they thought I was in a hurry or something. I told them to just replace the whole thing and I'll pick it up on Monday. So that's what they're doing.

Hopefully this is a correct diagnosis and accounts for all the weirdness I've experienced in the last couple of weeks. But it wouldn't surprise me too much if I have to get the front gears and/or derailleur replaced, and even the pedals replaced. (All of those parts are at least seven years old.) But maybe I'll be lucky.

(Once I managed to snap off a pedal on my then-bicycle. I was biking along and suddenly I had only one pedal. Fortunately, I was close to home and was even going to home so it was not a big deal. It was weird, though.)

After dropping off my bike I took a turn down State St. It was pretty bloody hot out today - quite strange for late September. Must be El Niño. I stopped off and had a shake at The Chocolate Shoppe, and scored a couple of Tim Powers novels at a bookstore. But otherwise it was not a great shopping day. My heart wasn't in it. I contemplated buying some CDs, but couldn't think of anything I was motivated enough to shop for. Oh, well; it's probably for the best.

This evening I went to the Angelic Brewing Company - a local bar/microbrewery - for a combined birthday party that several local fans were having. I stayed for about three hours, and had a good time despite the annoying loud music they were playing there. Most of the local clan came out for it, including several folks whom I almost never see at these gatherings.

Afterwards I kept plugging away at The Warrior's Apprentice. Not much more to say about it; I think I have Bujold's writing pretty much pegged as primarily fun-and-clever. I almost always hear that her best novel is Mirror Dance, which, if I read her books in order, falls near the end of the series-so-far. (I've actually already read the book after Mirror Dance, entitled Memory, for our book discussion.)

Oh, and I received a pretty funny piece of hate mail today about my review of the comic book Cerebus from someone who seemed mainly annoyed that my review didn't do much more than express my opinion. Wacky.
