Pieces of Me (part 3 of 4)

Theater

These are various images from theater experiences I've had. For some reason, I overwrote the image files of a couple of shows I did, so this is in no way representative of everytihng I've done. Some pictures are from shows in which I performed, some I directed, and one I wrote and Kymm directed.

One of the earliest shows I ever did was in my sophomore year of high school, when we did a show called "Magic Theater." These are all the girls who were in it with me. If you notice the girl in the upper right-hand corner, you'll see Caren, with whom I went to my sophomore hop:

Here are Caren and I at the prom. One of 10 proms I attended, which encouraged me to write the short play "10 Proms" and write this entry.

Here I am (squint and you'll see me) at Boston's Gay Pride march with my improv comedy group, "Naked Brunch." We could have gone pro, but everything fell apart due to personality conflicts. It's the one theater experience I regret the most, because it could have been so good.

The cast picture for "August", my first full-length script, which I also produced and directed. If you look at the last guy on the right, that's my friend Mike. He's been in just about every play I've directed, because I love the work he does as an actor. Every actor in this show was amazing, committing fully to a script that was too long, too preachy, and needed serious work before I decided to put it onstage. However, they made lemonade out of the lemons they were given, and I rate this as one of the most rewarding theater experiences I've had.

Here, my friend Valerie and I are rehearsing a scene from "The American Clock." I can't recall what scene we were in together, but we each played several characters (I played nine), so it could have been just about anything. Even though the photo is scratched, I like it more than most pictures in the theater of me.

Okay, this is my absolute favorite theater picture (of me) ever. Here, my friend Darlene is getting me ready for a performance of "Stiff Cuffs," in which I play Lesley, a drag queen who shows up in the very end of the play. When I did this role, my brother Sean said, "There are some things you just shouldn't see a brother do."

This is a picture taken from Kymm's production of "Statics and Dynamics" This is from the short play "On the Way Home," which is a very nice piece inspired by my mother. Kymm's friend Omar is on the left, and he rocked the house down, playing every male role in all six plays that made up the evening. Kymm sent me a set of prints of the show as a gift, but the real gift was the performances that her actors gave, and the terrific direction in which she took the piece.
