EL RAY "The Spider" 4 stars

"The Spider" starts off slow and easy, but quickly launches into a thick swirl of chords and double picked frenzy. Very adventurous and refreshing.
Spy Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE METALUNAS "Rod's Brain" 5 stars

Mark Brodie's band the Metalunas always create interesting songs. "Rod's Brain" is a moody surf grumbler with a thumpy grumbly backtrack. The dark double picked lead lines speak of spies and the uneasiness of sci-fi trouble. A very cool track!
Spy Surf Instrumental Stereo

TIJUANA BIBLES "Mexican Courage" 4 stars

Glissandos and raw edge, with vibrato danger and organ moodiness. "Mexican Courage" is a cool song with a simple melody riff that's very effective. It may not be a rager, but it is rhythmic and captivating.
Crunchy Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE ANACONDAS "Juanita" 4 stars

Elusive Spanish mysteries float on a reverb cloud in "Juanita." Pretty, distant, emotional, sad, and soothing in a teary-eyed way.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

LOST ACAPULCO "Las Calaveras del Justico" 4 stars

Big vibrato throb and a darkened mood... "Las Calaveras del Justico" is a fine moody track with a cautious optimism lurking in the reverb. The melody riff may be dark, but it's also fluid and very enjoyable.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

LOS WALKYSONS "Jinete Sin Cabeza" 5 stars

"Jinete Sin Cabeza" has an almost Henry Mancini feel to it, with the kind of galloping rhythm guitar reserved for cowboy epics. Catchy and open road rambling, its optimism is slightly guarded as the horses whinny and the hooves pound the pavement. Very cool!
Cowboy Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE NEBULAS "Mandalore" 5 stars

Big drums herald the lure of huge waves that should be seen and not ridden. Fast and darting like a near-death ride at Mavericks. Tuff and shimmering.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

SURF REPORT "Bluff Failure" 4 stars

Well now, this is nice. Pretty without being soft, ringing with distortion, and tribal without being trite. "Bluff Failure" is quite an adventure in uncharted environs where tourists never go. Lots of style and engaging changes.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

SR. BIKINI "Santo Had A Hot Rod" 4 stars

Screamin' into a rockin' dry surf jam, Sr. Bikini demonstrate a disposition for the trio sound. Lots of spunk and drive! the riff is simple and more rock or spy than surf, yet there are just enough hints of the brine to make it ride the crest!
Surf Rock Instrumental Mono

LOS TWANGERS "Calypso Voodoo" 4 stars

Vibrato lead guitar throbs over the top of a calypso rhythm guitar in this two guitar exercise. Lots of energy and a catchy vibe, with a haunting progression. "Calypso Voodoo" is quite cool!
Surf Instrumental Mono

THE BRILLANTINA'S "Klezmeil Queen of Swamp" 3 stars

The organ gurgles like a sick puppy as the undulating Klezmer beat pumps behind. Not just disturbed, but down right unnerving, yet attractive as if you can't turn away. Quite interesting.
Frat Klezmer Instrumental Stereo

SURFPATROUILLE "Slot Car Racer" 5 stars

A slow bluesy intro fades in, but then, from a stop, it launches into a monster Dick Dale-ish big guitar twang. Spectacular power and thick sound pump up double picked leads and dramatic arranging. Really cool!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

ANTONIO FARGAS "Bela's Theme (I Never Drink... Wine)" 4 stars

Punkoidal garage edge and beat, with a circular riff rock center. the endlessly pulsing vibrato drone of the second guitar is quite eerie, giving "Bela's Theme (I Never Drink... Wine)" a wholly unique sound. Great track!
Horror Rock Instrumental Stereo

ROCK-A-HULAS WITH EDDIE ANGEL "El Cruncho" 3 stars

Eddie Angel brings his edgy guitar to the Rock-A-Hulas for a drive around Twang Lake on a dangerous night. Haunting and graveyard spooky, "El Cruncho" is a rockin' intro for a late night venture into the last hotel.
Garage Instrumental Mono

THE MUTANTS "Timba Am Gaya" 4 stars

Vibrato throb shimmers the moodiness of "Timba Am Gaya" with exotica tropical inversions. More or less a riffy progression, yet very cool! It's dramatic and dangerous, and full of film score bigness. Raspy horns, splashy guitar, and tropical percussion, all in a mean lumbering setting.
Tropical Inversion Instrumental Stereo

THE COCKTAIL PREACHERS "Highball Holiday" 4 stars

This is rhythmic and rich, in a pure surf arrangement. The melody is optimistic and very cool. "Highball Holiday" sports great whammy and a sense of "Telstar" on the waves. Fine track.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

RAY DAYTONA AND GOOGOOBOMBOS "Weird On The Moon" 4 stars

Big surf twang adventure with a nearly cowboy melody and Theremin weirdness. Grumbly and reverb powered, with lots of flair and fun. very rhythm oriented, with a tight little lead riff.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

CHEWBACCAS "5000 Light Years Away From Digit Zero" 4 stars

Ooh - eerie and disquieting guitar with a "Batman" on acid urgency and angular thrash. More or less heavy, with dark imagery. "5000 Light Years Away From Digit Zero" is on the slower and more dramatic side, and quite grating, in the good way.
Space Instrumental Stereo

FIFTY FOOT COMBO "TripleXpresso" 3 stars

Thick fuzz, drum thunder, bass grumble, and organ whirl. Circular and slightly exotic, the track meanders through a relentless progression. Changing dynamics keep it from being repetitious. The tribal bridges are the best part.
Go-Go Groove Instrumental Stereo

THE BIKINI MEN "Invasion Of The Bikini Men" 3 stars

The Bikini Men drive a trashy garage riff with harsh glissandoes, and a circular surf melody line. "Invasion Of The Bikini Men" employs significant surfability in a garage vein. Tuff and cool.
Garage Surf Instrumental Mono

LOS PLANTRONICS "Signor Link" 4 stars

What would happen if Link Wray wrote Pushin' "Too Hard?" "Signor Link" answers the question. Big fuzzy fast and way cool in a weird sorta tribute way. The insane guitar effects and extra crunch make this a real battle zone for guitars.
Rock Instrumental Stereo

THE COFFIN DAGGERS "Moondawg" 4 stars

The Coffin Daggers rock the crap outta the Derry Weaver's earliest work. Where the Gamblers relied on intense rhythm, these guys rely on dark garage edge. The arrangement is very powerful and effective.
Garage Surf Instrumental Stereo

ROBERT AND THE ROBOTERS "Jutta Aus Kalkutta" 4 stars

"Jutta Aus Kalkutta" reminds me a little of a Kraan song gone awry. The rhythm guitar jangles an infectious rhythm, the chorus suggests fifties pop, the heavy guitar parts offset the delicate floaty leads. It's quite a nice track!
Quasi Surf Instrumental Stereo

URBAN SURF KINGS "7 Veils A Go Go" 4 stars

Middle eastern oasis scenes leak from every corner of the tent as "7 Veils a Go Go" floats across the sands. The choppy break counters the desert air with a mechanized urban feel. Great percussion counters the guitar lines. Very cool.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE BITCH BOYS "Suez Canal Affair" 5 stars

A bass line opens as cautious shimmer and feedback slithers across sundown waterways. In the distance, fins and feminine forms... this is a really good track, with a pretty melody and very nice production. The midsection is a faster more rock thing with a strong rhythm that yields back to surf with a different feel. Excellent!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
