Gazing into the Abyss: Michael Rawdon's Journal

Links du jour:

An Afghan-American writes about the tragedy of Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban. Powerful stuff, and a pretty good argument against just bombing the country to blazes.
Activist Michael Moore sounds off on last week's attacks. I don't always appreciate Moore's writing, but I usually agree with his positions.

Astros 10, Giants 3

Well, today I finally checked in the results of my big project. Whew! I've been working on it for weeks, as you know, and I think I touched something like 80 files. I'm very glad to get it in, partly because integrating other folks' ongoing changes to the code base with my own was getting to be a drag, and partly because it'll be nice to get feedback from everyone on how it looks.

It's certainly been educational. I understand the code base a lot better now. Now, hopefully, I can really get cranking on my future projects!

---

Tonight, Debbi, CJ, David and I went to see the Giants play the Astros in San Francisco. We left early because we'd heard that there would be extra security and checking of bags on the way in. Turns out we needn't have worried; everything went very smoothly and we even got to see the end of batting practice.

We had seats at the very top of the upper deck, which is still a pretty good view at Pac Bell, though CJ apparently isn't too wild about sitting up so high. It was somewhat chilly, but otherwise a nice night. (I caught David grimacing at CJ in the photo at the right.)

Unfortunately, the game was not so good. Giants starter Livan Hernandez got shelled early and often, and the Giants just couldn't string hits together for much of the game (even against starter Dave Mlicki, who's not exactly Cy Young). We got to see Barry Bonds play, but he didn't hit a home run, sad to say (though he did walk and hit a single through the hard-shifted infield).

The only real high point in the game was watching the replacement Astros players in the field commit three errors in the ninth inning, which helped 3 Giants runs to score. We saw them try to turn a double play and get neither out, and we saw them blow a throw to first base twice. It was downright comical, and just about made the game worthwhile all by itself. But otherwise it was not a happy night for Giants fans, as Houston won, 10-3.

But it's always fun to get out to the ballpark anyway. Can't complain. Next season I'll try to get more tickets to Giants games earlier in the season, to get better seats.
