Reds 2, Giants 1, Innings 14!

Woke up early-ish again this morning in order to pick up Subrata at 10:30, and get to CJ's by 11 so we could head off to the Giants game. I cut it a little close, but in fact we got on the road to 3Comdlestick Park a little early. Woo-hoo!

Today's opponent, the Cincinnati Reds, are leading their division, and their young player Sean Casey is leading the National League in batting average and is clearly a budding star.

The park was chilly when we arrived. We had seats way down the first base line, and in the shade. The sun was not yet out, and I was rather cold. But I persevered - garlic fries helped.

After the fries, we wandered over to the upper deck on the third base side and met fellow-journaller Jan Yarnot and her husband (well, I'm pretty sure it was her husband!), with whom I've corresponded a little bit. We only talked for a brief time, but she seemed pretty much like I expected: A pleasant person to talk to. (I believe Jan lives in Sacramento, which is why we haven't met before.)

The game turned out to be a pitchers duel between the Giants' Shawn Estes - throwing one of his best games of the season - and the Reds' Steve Parris, and the respective bullpens. The game finished the 9th inning tied 1-1, but had gone pretty fast, as we were only at the 2-1/2 hour mark. But, as it turned out, there were 5 more innings - easily the longest game I've ever been to - and the Reds won it on a solo home run in the 14th, off struggling Giants closer Robb Nen. Disappointing - it's the first game I've been to this year where the team I was rooting for lost.

But, it was a good game, even if I was pretty groggy from being out in the sun all day (yes, the sun came out around game time). I even got a bit sunburned, which surprised me since I thought I'd gotten that out of the way months ago for this year. Well, I guess 4 hours of sun will do that to you much of the time.

After the game we went to dinner with David, and then we were all feeling kind of sleepy, so I drove Subrata home, and came home myself.

A good weekend, but very, very busy!
