Back to Bottom-Feeding

Boy, it sure didn't take long for things to revert to normal once I returned from my vacation, did it? I feel like I haven't left - and that's not really a good thing.

Work was okay today, although I got tired out mid-afternoon (still recovering from being sick), and my heart wasn't entirely in the work; still reeling from Monday's bad news. After work I went out to see about getting my maps from Raven Maps framed, but the store I went to said they weren't sure they could reliably mount laminated maps, especially of that size (one map is 4 feet by 4 feet, and the other is 3x5). They recommended I try another store called the Great Big Picture store, who they thought might have more experience with that sort of thing. So I guess I will, but I hadn't expected it to be that big a deal.

I could have originally gotten the maps unlaminated, but I had envisioned getting them framed without glass, to make the details easier to see, and figured I should have them laminated by the map company, rather than going through the potential hassle of finding someone in Madison who could do it. Sigh.

I also realized that I forgot - again - to phone my landlord with some questions about next year's lease. I figure sometime in the next year I'm either going to buy a house or move, and I want to explore my options if I decide to move out of my apartment. My lease is up at the end of July - too soon for me to commit to either option - and my signed lease for next year needs to be in their hands by Tuesday. Sigh.

And I got home and had a letter from Apple saying that I hadn't sent them the UPS bar code from my G3 Mac box for the extra memory promotion and that I should try again. I'd actually sent them photocopies of the bar code, since I couldn't believe they actually wanted me to chop my box up, but apparently they do. Sigh.

And on the way home I ran into a huge traffic jam on the Beltline Highway, and forgot about picking up my APA from the Official Editor, and had to run out again to do that. Sigh.

This evening I treated myself to a gyro for dinner and went and started reading City on Fire, which is okay so far, and I suspect would be more impressive if I'd read its predecessor, Metropolitan. (Maybe we can convince the Hugo Awards to change their rules such that sequels are ineligible unless all prior novels in the series have won the award. Yeah, right.)

It's pretty damned hot and humid this week, over 90 for a daytime high, and quite sticky. Thank goodness for air conditioning. The cats seem still a little hot even with the A/C. But, of course, they're covered with fur.

My cold seems to be turning into a cough, which I think is progress, but it will probably annoy me throughout the weekend. Nonetheless, maybe I'll get away for a bit and head to a state park Saturday or Sunday. Obviously I didn't see enough nature in California.

One thing I did earlier this week was located several other journals by Madison residents:

  1. Jennifer Bunner
  2. Jeremy Charles
  3. Michael James Shmagin
It turns out that Jeremy works at Epic - apparently started there earlier this month - but I haven't met him yet. (It may be a while; Epic is hiring many, many people this summer, and I'm still catching up with many of last year's hires!) Jennifer and Michael seem to both be students at the UW. All three of these folks are at least seven years my junior. And heck, a year ago there were no on-line journalists in Madison (though there were a couple in Milwaukee).

Speaking of Epic, two long-term employees are leaving in the near future, or so I hear. I must be close to being in the top 10% in longevity there, having passed my four-year last Saturday. I wish that felt more momentous than it does.

Well, just about time for bed.
