Our 1998 draft was held in early April. One of our new members decided to bail two days before draft day, so to compensate we gave each of the nine remaining owners an extra, utility, batting slot, an extra pitching slot, and an extra $1.00 for the draft. Here's how I did:

Notice anything here? That's right, my pitching sucks! I realized partway through the draft that since Clemens, Johnson and Martinez had been kept from last year, there were few pitchers out there I actually wanted. So I patched something together, and boy does it look ugly! Actually I can defend most of those picks, except for Jason Dickson, who was a panic pick, since I knew I needed another starter. (I'd have been better off with Jim Corsi or someone.)

Chili Davis got hurt the first week of the season, and I couldn't replace him very quickly since none of my other players qualified at DH! Aargh! On the other hand, Brian Giles got off to a very hot start which helped alleviate the pain. However, I was stuck solidly in last place as of late April. It's gonna be a long season...


Results

Five years later, I've moved to California and never did finish this entry. At this point I don't even know how I finished up this season, but my recollection is that it wasn't good. If I can track down the final standings, I'll see if I can put something together here.

However, in 1999 I did join a new league, in my new location, which presented new challenges...
