In our first year - and my own first in roto-ball - I drafted a so-so team, including Jack McDowell, Juan Gonzalez, Jose Canseco, Mo Vaughn, Tim Raines, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Stanley and Chili Davis. Some of these picks worked out very well, as Stanley had his breakthrough year and Davis started a string of years in which he was an outstanding DH. Other picks fared less well, as Canseco hurt his arm in his infamous pitching escapade, and Charlie Leibrandt's arm finally fell off. However, I had some phenomenal luck, primarily in making several trades. I started with trading Todd Stottlemyre for Kirk Gibson, and then came the big one: I was able to trade Canseco, Leibrandt, Gonzalez, Eckersley, and several other players for Rafael Palmeiro, Kevin Appier, Lance Johnson and Ben McDonald, all of whom went on to have career years. Eventually, it turned out that I won the league, and got to have a six-pack of icky Yoo-Hoo chocolate drink poured over me. Oh, and I took my winnings and bought myself a modem.
